If you are a new PhD student, we offer a personal introductory meeting to help you get familiar with the PhD program and the many opportunities within our Graduate Research Training Group.
Feel welcome to contact the GRK Speaker Team at any time to schedule an informal meeting and get all your questions answered.
There are several services by the University of Rostock and other organisations for incoming PhD students, to support you.
The following list highlights some of them:
International Welcome Center of the University of Rostock "supports and advises international guest scientists and doctoral candidates. Here they can obtain information on topics such as work permits, immigration law and language courses. The services offered by the International Welcome Center also include help with filling out forms and support in finding accommodation".
The regular meeting named “Stammtisch” is every Wednesday at 7 pm at the E1nstein Lounge, Erich-Schlesinger Str. 19, 18055 Rostock.
Rostock International Office is the hub for all international exchange activities at the University of Rostock.
They are responsible for:
- coordinating international relations
- developing and implementing projects and programs with foreign partners.
- advising and supporting foreign students and prospective students
- providing study abroad advice for German students
- implementing the ERASMUS+ program
The General Student Committee AStA (German: Allgemeiner Studierenden Ausschuss) has different departments working on different topics, e.g., Social Department, Culture, Anti-Discrimination & Gender Equality, International Department. They help with any problem. You can contact them anonymously.
Another student organisation is the Erasmus Student Network (ESN) - Local erasmus initiative (LEI), a non-profit international organisation representing international students, to "provide opportunities for cultural understanding and self-development under the principle of Students Helping Students".
The Language Center offers courses in more than 10 different languages, courses for academic writing and self-study possibilities. A good possibility to get to know people and to learn a new language!
The University's Diversity Department of Rostock provides a wide range of consulting services for its members to support them in different conditions, such as:

Basic University Services
User Account (ITMZ)
Your ITMZ account gives you access to all central university services.
It is usually created automatically once your employment has been processed.
If you experience any issues, your group's administrative staff can assist you.
The ITMZ hosts a series of services, the most important ones are listed below.
Please note that, in accordance with Section 15 of the University of Rostock's Matriculation Regulations (07.06.2022), enrolled doctoral researchers must submit an informal written request including a brief justification in order to enroll in their 11th semester.
he request must be accompanied by a written statement from the supervisor. The statement should explain the reasons for the extended duration of the doctoral project and indicate the expected date of completion of the doctoral procedure.
A leave of absence is not permitted for doctoral researchers. If a further extension of enrollment becomes necessary at a later stage of the doctoral project, a new request together with an updated supervisor's statement must be submitted.
